INSNA is the professional association for researchers interested in social network analysis. The association is a non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Delaware. Founded by Barry Wellman in 1978, the current president is Martin Everett. A copy of its charter and by-laws are available online.

International Symposium on Graph Drawing

The symposium is a forum for researchers, practitioners, developers and users working on all aspects of graph visualization and representations. The range of issues considered in graph drawing includes algorithms, graph theory, geometry, topology, order theory, graphic languages, perception, applications and practical systems. Much research in graph drawing is motivated by applications to systems for viewing and interacting with graphs. The interaction between theoretical advances and implemented solutions is an important part of the graph drawing field. Results on perception and visualization issues related to diagrams are relevant.

International Sunbelt Social Network Conference

The Sunbelt Conference, sponsored by the International Network for Social Network Analysis, is a major forum for social and behavioral scientists, mathematicians and statisticians, computer scientists, and all others interested in social networks.

Cytoscape is an open source bioinformatics software platform for visualizing molecular interaction networks and integrating these interactions with gene expression profiles and other state data. Although Cytoscape was originally designed for biological research, now it is a general platform for complex network analysis and visualization.

graphviz is a set of graph drawing tools, including a web service interface. Source code and binary executables for common platforms are available. In particular, the package includes dot (hierarchical layouts of directed graphs) and neato (spring-model layouts of undirected graphs). graphviz tools run stand-alone, but can also be extended to create interfaces to external databases and systems.

A graph layout software program for social networks, fully compatible with UCINET IV. It allows the user to display node attributes visually, and to display information on a node. In paticular, it can calculate Krackhardt's graph theoretical dimensions of informal organizations.

A powerful program for the analysis of large networks. If you are looking for features not supported by visone, or your networks are very large, we recommend this one.

A very general program designed to facilitate the analysis of social network data. The program includes measures of centrality and connectivity, methods of detecting subgroups and positions, stochastic models, measures of similarity and dissimilarity, and network hypothesis testing with both matrix correlation (QAP) and multiple matrix regression (MRQAP). Besides these network analytic routines, UCINET contains multivariate techniques such as multidimensional scaling, cluster analysis, correspondence analysis, and regression. Data transformation and management tools are available, including the creation of line graphs, converse graphs, node-by-line incidence matrices, multigraphs from valued or multiplex graphs, pooled graphs, and semi-groups of relations. In addition, UCINET includes a full-featured matrix algebra language.

yFiles is a powerful easy-to-use Java library for viewing, editing, optimizing, layouting and animating graph-like structures. Furthermore, yFiles is fit for platform independent Internet solutions since it is written in pure Java. Its editor/viewer fully supports the complete set of graphical attributes necessary for effective graph visualization. It also supports functionalities behind like labels for nodes and edges (even multi-line labels), self-loops, multiple views of a graph, grid mode for orthogonal graph drawing, extension packages loadable at runtime, true interaction between editor/viewer and extension packages, etc.
